Different types of massage therapies have become popular these days. Some common names include deep tissue massage, Swedish massage, Lymphatic massage, Sports massage, Hot stone massage, Thai massage, and Oncology massage to name a few. Each of these types of massage techniques uses a different method and offers different benefits. However, there is a distinct difference between each type of massage therapy. Although the two therapies share many similarities, they are in fact different. However, these key differences between the two therapies allow one to decide which type of massage is good for them. This article discusses the main difference between Swedish massage and Deep tissue massage.
Technique used in Swedish Massage
The basic purpose of Swedish massage is to provide gentle relaxation. This is done by using long strokes and light-to-firm pressure and a more forceful technique that releases tension deep in the muscles and connective tissues of the body. It is known that Swedish massage forms the basis of many deep-tissue massage techniques.
In Swedish massage, light but long strokes are used to release surface tension and stimulate circulation in the muscles. The same technique is used in deep tissue massage, but with more force and pressure.
Technique used in Deep Tissue Massage
The main difference between Swedish massage and deep tissue massage is the pressure and force used. Although the strokes are long in both kinds of massage, deep tissue massage uses more force and pressure to release tension in the deeper layers of muscles in the connective tissues. These connective tissues are present beneath the muscles and are also referred to as fascia. Along with the long gliding strokes, the massage therapist will also use a combination of kneading and friction to release surface tension. The five basic strokes used in Swedish massage include Effleurage, Friction, Vibration, Petrissage, and Tapotement.
Basic Difference Between the two Techniques
As mentioned above, the basic difference between the two techniques, Swedish massage and deep tissue massage, is the degree of pressure applied by the therapist. Swedish massage uses long strokes accompanied by light-to-firm pressure. This gives a relaxing experience to the person receiving the massage.
On the other hand, deep tissue massage applies a lot more pressure to release tension deep under the muscles. However, the thing to note here is that the level of pressure applied in deep tissue massage is sometimes a lot more than can be tolerated by some people. This is why deep tissue massage is not suited for all. The purpose of deep tissue massage is to work out deep muscle tension and to aid recovery after a muscle strain. People involved in sports or those that have suffered a muscular injury will be most likely to get deep tissue massage.
